Chris Cessna, LMFT, MFC #83316

Chris-Cessna300I have extensive experience working with men and women seeking support with mood issues, compulsive behaviors, substance abuse and dependence as well as individuals wanting to address the impact of traumatic or distressing life experiences. My work with clients is strongly influenced by Brené Brown’s shame resilience theory, the research of interpersonal neurobiology from Dan Siegel and others, and family systems theory.

In our work together, you will find a safe space to be honest about your struggles. I respect the courage it takes to reach out and ask for help and in return I offer empathic, specialized, and collaborative care. Whether you are struggling with identity issues, shame, loneliness, mood issues, disordered eating or pain from your past, I am committed to working with you to confront the challenges

We will work together to identify the thoughts, emotions, and beliefs that are keeping you stuck, and explore ways to help you live with authenticity and freedom.

I have been married for 12 years, and we have three young children. After growing up in small-town Illinois, San Diego has become home. I love enjoying the outdoors while hiking and backpacking, especially exploring the high altitude scenery of the Sierra Nevada. I am passionate about good coffee, and my newest hobby has become never-ending basketball games with my 6 year old son.

Registered Marriage and Family Therapy Intern
Supervised by Rebecca Bass-Ching, LMFT MFC #44584

The Potentia TeamI hold sacred the courage that it takes for you to show up and share your story. The unfortunate message we’re often told is being vulnerable and reaching out for help is a sign of weakness. I believe the opposite is true. The ability to be vulnerable and give yourself the opportunity to heal takes true courage. It is a privilege to work with you as you take some brave steps to enter the healing process.

I have experience working with couples, families and individuals struggling with substance abuse and dependency, mental health disorders, and the long-term impacts of trauma. My work is influenced by EMDR Therapy, Internal Family Systems and Bowen Family Therapy, which focuses on the effects of patterns that have been passed down through family of origin. These generational patterns are what influence the way in which you see the world today.

My professional passion is working with couples and individuals seeking healing from their past traumatic or distressing life events. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, disordered eating, substance abuse – the silencing power of shame, pain that continues to follow you from your past, or a combination of them all, we will work together to navigate through your unique story and journey of healing.

I am from the Northeast and have been married for four years to a native San Diegan. We lived on the East Coast for several years and have recently relocated to sunny San Diego. Being a native easterner, I enjoy the beauty of all the seasons, the opportunity to travel, and of course a perfect cup of morning coffee to start my day.

Megan Holt, DrPH, MPH, RD,  Nutrition, Wellness + Preventive Care

The Potentia TeamI have specialized experience in various levels of care of ED treatment, including residential, day treatment, and intensive outpatient care. Additionally, I have extensive experience in acute care/clinical nutrition and sports nutrition. I earned a master’s degree in public health epidemiology from San Diego State University, and a doctorate in public health with an emphasis on preventive care in August 2013.

What I enjoy most about this work is the interdisciplinary ‘team’ approach, as we know that having a strong and collaborative multidisciplinary team in place leads to improved treatment outcomes.

My passions include running, swimming, yoga, farmer’s markets, animals, learning, live music/music festivals and spending time with my beautiful puppy, Reba. I moved to San Diego at the age of 18, and spent my undergraduate and graduate years at San Diego State University, and quickly fell in love with this wonderful city and all that San Diego has to offer.

I’m very grateful to be a part the talented team here at Potentia!

Molly LaCroix, LMFT, MFC #51106

The Potentia TeamI have deep respect for the courage it takes to tackle the challenges you are facing. Those challenges might be in relationships with the important people in your life, or they might stem from issues that you carry within you, burdens that are too heavy to carry alone.

Change can be scary, and it can be difficult. Yet, it can also be empowering and life-giving. Staying stuck in our current patterns of relating, or in the negative beliefs we have about ourselves, or in feelings of anxiety, depression, and shame saps our joy and our energy.

I believe change begins to happen when we are authentic about our struggles, both within ourselves and with a witness whom we trust. Just naming them, saying them out loud, begins to open up the possibilities. One of my primary responsibilities is providing a safe environment for discovery, grieving, and growing.

I think of myself as a coach. I accept you where you are, and work with you to pursue your goals. I have expertise to help you in your process of change, and I will encourage, challenge, and celebrate you.

Specialized Training

  • EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – a therapeutic approach for healing the effects of traumatic and distressing life events such as abuse, neglect, loss, and shaming.
  • Bowen Family Systems Theory – A therapeutic approach that helps us understand and work through the patterns of relating in our first family, and how those patterns affect our functioning in our current family, our professional life, and even our relationship with God.
  • Grief and Loss – Four years as a bereavement counselor at the San Diego Hospice Center for Grief Care and Education. Provided training for interns on the impact of early childhood trauma. Served patients and their families.

Melissa McCormick, MA, IMF #82646

Registered Marriage and Family Therapy Intern
Supervised by Rebecca Bass-Ching, LMFT MFC #44584

Melissa-300I am passionate about supporting people facing the messiness of life — its difficulties and its joys — with actionable tools and approaches that can provide sustained change. It is inspiring providing space so people can take risks and bravely learn to respect their whole story — on their own terms. Working with clients in a therapeutic setting is a great privilege. I know first hand that the healing journey can be uncomfortable. Facing fears and reflecting inward is tough work. Yet, this is where people can discover the pathway to freedom by discovering their own reserves of courage.

I help teens and women struggling with disordered eating, trauma and distressing life events, anxiety, grief, life adjustments, identity issues, and shame. Together we can define your own goals for change.

Along with my own journey through therapy, faith is another avenue that has brought me great freedom. I enjoy integrating evidenced based clinical approaches with faith for those who value a mind, body and soul approach.

Sally Peterson, LCSW #20865

sally-300Hello and welcome! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have extensive clinical experience working with a diverse population of individuals.

I am particularly passionate about working with individuals who have experienced:
— betrayal by a loved one
— job loss/changes
— a significant life event (good or bad)
— just feel stuck in life and relationships

It is an honor to support those who have the courage to reach out for help. Far too many suffer in silence with mood struggles such as depression and anxiety in addition to low self-worth, relational problems or difficulties with change. Help and relief are available.

Whether you are a young adult, middle-age or older, single, married or divorced, ‘Black Sheep’ or ‘Golden Child,’ my approach is one that addresses you as a unique individual. I believe a non-judgemental and collaborative atmosphere provides a safe place for you to honestly work on current challenges as well as explore past hurts and traumas. Working together, you will identify ways to heal past wounds and navigate present hurdles in your life with more ease and confidence.

Specialized Training:

  • EMDR, Fully Basic Trained
  • Dual Diagnosis — Five years of clinical experience working with men and women struggling with substance abuse in addition to psychiatric disorders at UCSD Outpatient Psychiatric Services

I am a California native and have been living in San Diego for over 20 years. I believe in living life outside the box and as such, my husband and I took a three year hiatus to cruise the South Pacific in our 32′ sailboat several years ago. It was a life-changing experience. I love traveling, meeting new people and learning about different cultures. With our two elementary school children, my husband and I enjoy sailing, paddling, and swimming.

Kelly D. Schauermann, Certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist, Certified Yoga Teacher

The Potentia Team

As a Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT) and Certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist (CPRYT) with 6 years of teaching and private practice experience, my intention is to create a safe space for you to connect with yourself, mind, body and spirit. I believe that each person has a unique story. By safely integrating the body into your current exercise program and/or healing journey, you have the opportunity to really feel, hear and see the incredible story your body holds, and heal the relationship you have with yourself.

I have worked along side Rebecca and the Potentia team for nearly 3 years, leading small group classes, workshops and private sessions in the beautiful Potentia space. Additionally, I work with churches, women’s groups and wedding parties to create fun, mindful and safe yoga classes to suit every body. I have a passion for bringing mindful movement to the faith community in a unique and accessible way that allows for participants to connect with God, as well as supporting women recovering from traumatic experiences, and/or struggling with a challenged relationship involving addiction.

Additionally, I am a senior teacher at Core Power Yoga, and assist with coaching and leading their lifestyle programs, as well as supporting new teachers as they learn to find their voice as an instructor.

My husband and I have lived in San Diego for 9 years, have one daughter and are avid baseball fans. I love the art of cooking, floral arranging, gardening, writing and rearranging my furniture (much to my husbands dismay). My personal movement, meditation and faith practice keeps me grounded and grateful, which has been the foundation for my own healing journey. I look forward to meeting you on your journey!

Graden Tonna, MA IMF #82170

Registered Marriage and Family Therapy Intern
Supervised by Rebecca Bass-Ching, LMFT MFC #44584

The Potentia TeamI was hesitant to attend therapy when the opportunity first presented itself. I held the belief that individuals only attended therapy when their life was falling apart, a sentiment with which I did not identify, and I did not have a good understanding of the changes I wanted to make. Despite my initial ambivalence, the process motivated me towards change and taught me how much opportunity for growth existed within my reach. This process also taught me that whether or not I am in a season of crisis, therapy can be beneficial for my own growth.

As a result of my own experience in therapy in addition to my extensive learning + training, I see the value that is inherent in every individual. I aim to uphold a therapeutic space where you will experience trust, acceptance, and empowerment so you can feel safe to explore the difficult parts of your life and obtain clarity during life-transitions.

Whether you are experiencing depression, anxiety, addictions, compulsive behavior, the effects of trauma/difficult life experiences or relational challenges, I would be honored to partner with you in your growth toward relational, psychological, and spiritual health.

My wife and I strive to live simple and integrated lives. We share a passion for serving our community, which has led us toward opening our home to children in the foster care system. I have a genuine interest in learning, which has led me to adopt many hobbies. Most notably, I enjoy reading, surfing, baking sourdough bread, and raising chickens. Currently, I am learning to be content knowing I will never perfect any of my hobbies.
